Smith Lake Waterfowl Field Trip

April 23 @ 7:30 AM 10:30 AM

Join FAS field trip leader Darcy Thomas for a morning of spring birding at Smith Lake in Kila. Smith Lake is surrounded on three sides by wetland, making the birdwatching superb. The lake is part of the Smith Lake Waterfowl Production Area and is a premier birding spot for migrating waterfowl, raptors, and shorebirds. As we drive around the lake, we will stop at pullouts and the fishing access site, looking for Trumpeter Swans, Sandhill Cranes, diving and dabbling ducks, bluebirds, and swallows.

This field trip is friendly to those who use a wheelchair or have difficulty walking, and we will communicate between cars with walkie-talkies. Vault toilets are available at the beginning of the trip, as well as at the boat launch. Bring binoculars and/or a spotting scope to enhance your viewing experience and help spot a variety of birds from a distance.

A Montana Conservation License is required for this field trip, which may be purchased at sporting goods stores, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks offices, or online at https://ols.fwp.mt.gov. To register, contact Darcy at (406) 407-8263 or darcy@flatheadaudubon.org.
