See bison, birds and other wildlife on a day trip to the Bison Range. The range is home to up to 500 bison which can be viewed safely from your car. Other wildlife includes black bear, elk, deer, bighorn sheep, pronghorn antelope, mountain cottontail and more. More than 200 bird species have been catalogued on the range. The group is likely to see woodpeckers, raptors and many passerines. The range protects one of the most endangered ecosystems in North America, the intermountain bunchgrass prairie. The trip will start in the morning with a tour of the Visitor Center before driving over Red Sleep Mountain. Be prepared for short walks on designated trails by wearing good walking shoes. Bring your binoculars, spotting scope, lunch, snacks and water. Due to few pullouts, the group will be carpooling and will be limited to 4 cars. Riders should plan to pay drivers for gas. There is also a cost of $10 per vehicle for a day pass. The group will leave Kalispell at 6 AM and return by 4 PM. Contact Darcy Thomas to register at 406 407-8263 or darcy@flatheadaudubon.org.
